NEW INTERVIEW – Singer & Actress LeToya talks her passion for music, acting, & future plans!
by thisisme on Jun.03, 2010, under INTERVIEWS, PRESS

Interview by Arts & Entertainment writer Meriam Bouarrouj
Letoya Luckett is the true definition of a triple threat in the entertainment industry. A founding member of the Grammy-winning music group Destiny’s Child, Luckett has made quite an identity and impressive resume for herself. Her first solo musical effort debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, and now she’s now in the process of working on her third album. Yet Luckett is not just a musical talent. Aside from being a successful and songwriter, she acts, too! Luckett is currently starring in the highly-anticipated summer movie, Killers, with Ashton Kutcher. Luckett generously took time out of her busy schedule to discuss with me her fun experiences while filming Killers, what it is that she would like to most achieve with her music, as well as the most valuable lessons she’s taken away from her experiences.
Killers hits theaters this Friday! You got to star in it with Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl.
Letoya- I’m so excited about it. We did the premiere last night and that was so much fun. It’s a great movie. A great date movie. A lot of action. More action than I even expected! But I think the ladies will definitely enjoy it because of the storyline and how they fall in love. You know Ashton Kutcher is naturally delicious, so. (Laughs) It will work for everybody.

LeToya Luckett may have established her worldwide fame in the music business as one fourth of the original Destiny’s Child but it is her entrepreneurial endeavors that define her in her hometown of Houston. After departing from the group, Luckett invested her time and energy to opening up her Lady L Boutique in 2004. Now, she maintains two stores and is riding high with her reinvented entertainment career. She is currently preparing a new album and is co-starring in this summer’s action-comedy, “Killers”, alongside Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher. For an industry veteran of 10 plus years, her drive is reminiscent of someone who has just arrived. She hopes that quality inspires her supporters to take a driven approach to achieving their own success. TAP caught up with Lady L to discuss her brand, boutiques and beats.
Why did you begin Lady L Boutique?
Honestly, it came from having a shopping problem. My mother and I sat down and I said, ‘Mom I really want to open a boutique’. I thought it would be a great way for people in Houston to get the fashion they see on the runway and worn by celebrities. My mother has a background in accounting, so she managed the business side of it. I have learned so much from watching her make the deals.
How much did you initially invest in the store?
Our initial investment was between $30,000 and $50,000. I didn’t want go on the credit side of financing; I wanted to pay cash for everything.
What is your role in the store?
I am the boutique’s buyer. I also organize the charity events and fashion shows we host.
JENNIFER HUDSON WAS THE ONE ORIGINALLY CASTED FOR "PREACHER'S KID"'S LEAD ROLE (BUT IT'S LETOYA WHO GOT THE PART!)
by LeToyaNews on May.04, 2010, under PRESS

Black Voices caught up with Stan Foster as he speaks about working from the director’s chair and casting the lead roles.
Out today on home video is ‘Preacher’s Kid,’ which stars LeToya Luckett of the original Destiny’s Child. She makes her movie breakthrough in this inspiring tale bursting with music.
Making his directing debut is screenwriter Stan Foster, whose previous film was ‘Woman Thou Art Loosed.’ which starred Kimberly Elise, Loretta Devine and Debbi Morgan.
Family, faith and music. Small-town girl Angie King leaves the first two behind to pursue a dream of singing stardom. Luckett plays Angie, the daughter of a stern but loving bishop, whose attraction to the star of a traveling gospel show takes her on the road and into romance, heartbreak and the realization that happiness may lie in the home she left behind. Join her on a powerful coming-of-age journey.
Also in the film are Durrell “Tank” Babbs, Essence Atkins, Gregory Alan Williams, Clayton English and Sharif Atkins.

After writing screenplays for such a long time, what made you decide it was time to direct?
Stan Foster: It was a natural extension. I sold a movie to Lionsgate a couple of years, and I thought about directing it from that time. I also spoke with some colleagues, Michael Schultz and Bill Duke, about advice and they were really encouraging. No one has this vision like me, so let me see what I can do. I was really happy with the process and how it came out.
How did ‘Preacher’s Kid’ become your first film to direct?
SF: This was my baby. Everything I write, from ‘Woman Thou Art Loosed’ to screenplays I sold are a piece of me, and it’s hard to have a baby and hand it over to someone else. This was the first time I got a chance to see it through from every word on the screen. Every frame of the movie has my stamp on it.
What were you looking to bring to this film that you think hadn’t been seen before?
SF: This is the first movie to show the world that there is a world of gospel stage plays. This goes back to Tyler Perry, Michael Matthews and some of the guys that came before them. ‘Woman Thou Art Loosed’ was the first gospel stage play that turned into a film. It’s such a fascinating world when you go to one of these stage plays and you see 95 percent black. A few white producers would come by and one would say, “I had no idea that this world even existed.” Tyler [Perry] wasn’t even in the radar when this came out.
I put together the stage play for ‘Woman Thou Art Loosed,’ and Tyler happened to be in the audience, and he wound up talking to one of the producers and began directing ‘Woman Thou Art Loosed’ and T.D Jakes’ follow up play, ‘Behind Closed Doors,’ and that got him really rolling in the game of stage plays. A few years later, we are doing the film version and Tyler comes on the set, and he partnered with my producing partner Reuben Cannon, and those two have been making money ever since. ‘Woman Thou Art Loosed’ was really the catalyst in a lot of ways to have stage plays make the big screen.
Can you talk about casting LeToya Luckett in the lead role?
LETOYA CLEARS UP MATT KEMP DATING RUMORS
by thisisme on Apr.29, 2010, under PRESS

LeToya gave an interview to Honeymag and said that her nad Matt Kemp were “just friends”. Read the full article below.
It feels like just yesterday when LeToya Luckett, along with LaTavia Roberson, split Destiny’s Child. In the ten years since, she’s emerged as a solo artist, boutique owner, and now actress with roles in Preacher’s Kid (out on DVD) and the upcoming feature film Killers with Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl. In between movies and albums, her love life also took a torrid turn when her alleged boyfriend, Matt Kemp, reportedly dissed her for Rihanna. There’s no better way to address these rumors than with her debut column for Honey.
LeToya speaks on her latest projects, the Matt situation, and the break-up with Destiny’s Child:
There was a time after Destiny’s Child broke up, when I was out of the spotlight. I was trying to figure out what to do. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do music again — be in a group or go solo. Actually, the thought of going solo was very scary to me. I didn’t think I could do it and would get mad when people told me I should record an album by myself.
I wasn’t upset about losing a chance to go to the Grammy’s or any celebrity perks. It was the loss of the friendship that was difficult. That was the hardest part of the separation. These girls [Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson] were my friends from elementary school. We went to church together, we hung out together.
NEW BLOG POST FROM LETOYA LUCKETT: "Never Stay In Your Comfort Zone"
by LeToyaNews on Mar.04, 2010, under PRESS

LeToya wrote another blog post on GlobalGrind. Here it is…
Last week I had the honor of being a keynote speaker at the 33rd Annual Big XII Conference on Black Student Government at UT in Austin. The conference is designed to address issues facing African-American students on college campuses, and I was asked to basically tell my life story and speak about conquering your fears. I am so blessed to do what I love to do, but becoming a solo artist terrified me! At the time all I knew was being in a group situation, so when it came time for me to perform I was like, “You want me to do what? I don’t know who told you I’m supposed to go out there by myself!”, but I had to learn to ignore my fears and remember that this was a opportunity that God has blessed me with.
“Excellence is not a single act. You are what you repeatedly do.”
Someone told me this a few years ago, and I realized that it’s true! If you repeatedly let your fears stop you from of doing something, there’s a good chance you are blocking the blessing that God has for you and you’re limiting yourself from reaching your full potential. When situations I was unfamiliar with or not prepared for came up, I could have made the decision to stay in my “comfort zone”, but I wouldn’t be where I am or who I am today. Now, I’m not saying it will be easy or that you won’t find yourself nervous in new situations in your life, but after taking that initial step out on faith and ignoring that little voice saying, “I don’t think you should this” or “maybe you should wait a little while longer”, you will find yourself doing things you never thought you would do.
So what about you? What are some fears you had and conquered? How did you get over them? Let me know! Talk with you soon!
Love,
LeToya

LeToya reveals that LaTavia is getting back to doing music!!

Interview by Janaya Black
But with an iron determination to prove that she wasn’t just a background singer for “Beyonce and them”, Letoya Luckett has taken the industry by storm, and justifiably so. She more that proved that she has the vocal chops that others said were non-existent on her self-titled debut solo album, and validated that it wasn’t a fluke by going platinum.
Now she’s back with a vengeance with her new album, Lady Love, which boasts 2 hit singles and a new movie to boot. The FrontPage got a chance to catch up with Ms. Luckett to find out more about her new movie Preacher’s Kid and what more the world can expect to see from a woman who obviously knows what it takes to get to where she wants to be.
LETOYA INTERVIEW WITH WAVE NEWSPAPER
by LeToyaNews on Feb.03, 2010, under PRESS

Although she split from the group 10 years ago — and it has since been disbanded altogether — LeToya Luckett is probably still best known as one of the original members of Destiny’s Child. The 28-year-old Texas native released her self-titled debut album in 2006, and after it was certified platinum, she set her sights on another venture: acting. Currently starring in “Preacher’s Kid,” based on the biblical story of the prodigal son, Luckett portrays Angie, a pastor’s daughter whose freedom has long been restricted by her father’s profession. Tired of the pressure, she joins a traveling gospel group against her father’s wishes. She recently spoke to the Wave about the evolution of her career, and the pressure of making her feature film debut in a lead role.
How did you get this role? Were you approached with a script or did you audition?
I tried out. I was actually cast for another role in the movie, the role of Desiree [played by Tammy Townsend] but four days before the shoot date, director Stan Foster called me and asked whether I was interested in playing the role of Angie. To my knowledge, Angie had already been cast … I had never done a feature film before, so I was like, “Oh my God, I know nothing about this.” Needless to say, they flew me down the very next day, put me with an acting coach and it was on from then.
Did you have trouble relating to your character?
My father is a minister, so I had some experience with being the preacher’s kid a bit, though I didn’t have immediate pressures. But, just being in the church period, a lot … of perfection is expected of you and people think you can’t do this or you can’t do that. It is hard sometimes to just grow up and experience your own life, and that’s what this movie is about. Angie, which is the character I play, really doesn’t get the opportunity to have a regular life like a teenager would — like being able to go out and go to the movies with friends. Her father didn’t really allow that. She eventually moved out on her own, bumps her head a couple of times and then she eventually comes back home.
