But with an iron determination to prove that she wasn’t just a background singer for “Beyonce and them”, Letoya Luckett has taken the industry by storm, and justifiably so. She more that proved that she has the vocal chops that others said were non-existent on her self-titled debut solo album, and validated that it wasn’t a fluke by going platinum.

Now she’s back with a vengeance with her new album, Lady Love, which boasts 2 hit singles and a new movie to boot. The FrontPage got a chance to catch up with Ms. Luckett to find out more about her new movie Preacher’s Kid and what more the world can expect to see from a woman who obviously knows what it takes to get to where she wants to be.

FrontPage: Tell me about your new movie “Preacher’s Kid”.

Letoya Luckett: Gosh, I’m so excited about the film. It wasn’t expected because I was originally casted for another role and ended up with the lead role. So God was in that definitely. I know acting has always been something that I’ve wanted to do so when I got the opportunity I was so excited that Stan Foster, the director, actually saw something in me. Saw something that he felt I would be able to carry the movie… and it was a lot of pressure. I didn’t even know if I could take all of that! But I had a great team. I had a great director who was patient with me. I had a great coach, Troy Rollins, and an amazing supporting cast. They really, really helped me through everything and guided me through. And it’s a lot of new actors in this movie. I’m happy that I got this experience.

It’s the story of the Prodigal Son from the book of Luke 15, as a matter of fact, in the Bible. It’s about a father who God has blessed over and over again with riches and gold and prosperity; He just kept prospering him. And he has 2 sons, and of the sons, of course who was one of the heir to the throne, asks for his portion. He took his portion and went out and basically wild out and he came back to his father’s and his father continues to love his son, and that’s where the story comes from.

FP: Tell me about your character.

LL: Angie is the character that I play and basically, she doesn’t have a life outside of the church walls. Her father is very strict on her and she’s pretty bored and she really just wants to get out and live her own life and make her own way, but her father has the reigns. But that’s to be expected because it’s his only daughter. Her mother has passed and eventually she goes out for an audition and that’s where she meets Tank’s character, Devlin, and they take her on the tour. She gets into bad situations and learns a lot and basically goes back home. It’s a great story, great film.

FP: When is it coming out?

LL: Preacher’s Kid is in theaters right now. Everybody’s been calling and Twittering me asking if it’s in theaters? Is it playing yet? Is it showing in my city? And if you go to preacherskidmovie.com it will show you all the theaters that are showing the movie. So look for hat.

FP: Looking back on the whole experience, do you see yourself doing more movies?

LL: Absolutely! I have another film that will be in theaters, and it’s called Killers. That one’s starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl. It’s a comedy.

FP: With respect to your transition from being in a group, to being solo, to being an actress, what are some of the things you’ve learned along the way about yourself?

LL: As far as transitioning, it is a big transition but at the same time it’s a lot alike because it all involves creativity and emotion. If it’s a song you have to be able to portray that [emotion] to sing that song. I picked up on this whole acting world a lot easier than I expected because I’ve always admired different actors, but at the same time because I absolutely love Denzel Washington, Angela Bassett, and a lot of different people. I want to get some of the same roles that they’ve been able to get, so I have a lot of work to do (laughing). So that’s a lot of pressure on me, but I would love to be able to always continue in my career in film and hopefully it will grow, and mature, and blossom and do all the things that my singing career has done.

FP: We see you topping the charts with singles like “Not Anymore” and “Regret”, how much control did you have in putting your album together?

LL: I had some. The label, especially with this album, took the reins. I had more control with the last album than I did with this one. I think they got excited about certain things that they were tying in with it and they just wanted to be on the same page about everything.

FP: Do you still keep in contact with LaTavia at all?

LL: I do! I just talked to her two weeks ago, and she’s doing well and getting back to doing music.

FP: Do you see yourself doing any collabos with your any of your former DC band mates?

LL: If God presents that opportunity, absolutely.

FP: So what’s next for you?

LL: This year I will be starting on my third album. I will also be promoting Killers with actors Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, and that will be in theaters very soon. I’ll be doing a lot, so make sure you stay tuned!
