15 BEST & WORSE ALBUMS OF 2009

by on Dec.18, 2009, under LETOYANEWS FEATURES

Christmas is coming. Everybody I know will get a copy of “Lady Love”. (I bought an extra 15 copies and if you a REAL fan you should do the same). If you want to add other albums to your xmas packs and you don’t know what to pick, I made the research for you to help you with your choice.

2009 was the WORSE in music. Autotune destroying the airwaves, bad music and bad album sales. I CAN NOT listen to the radio no more! BUT still a few good albums came out.

Here is from a LeToya’s fan perspective the best and worse in music for the year of 2009.

15 BEST ALBUMS OF 2009

#15. MARIAH CAREY: Memoirs of an imperfect angel 2.8/5
Biggest disappointment of the year

Mariah Carey failed to impress this year. I like the old school vibe on some songs but something is just missing from that album to make it as magic as her previous ones. Still a cool album but not her best. (PS: I am a Mariah lamb)
Best tracks: “The impossible”, “It’s a wrap”, “Up out my face”.

#14 TIMBALAND: Shock Value II 3/5
This album as a whole is not as good as “Shock Value 1″ (Where’s the ol Timbaland!!?) but there are a few very good songs: “Tomorrow in the bottle”, “Ease Off the liquor”.

#13. CIARA: Fantasy Ride 3/5
Over-promoted album of the year (with no results)

I have a love/hate type of relationship with Ciara.  By the time that album was released I was already tired of it since 95% of it leaked months before. The three main singles were really bad. (in a bad way). “Go Girl” had a hot video but the track just plainly sucked, “Never Ever” was aite. Love sex magic was being played only because of Justin Timberlake. It sounded like a reject from his own album “Futuresex, Lovesounds”. Hell even Britney Spears declined to record the song. I’m just shocked that she got a Grammy nomination for it. (thank you Justin). I wish LeToya had 1/10 of the promotion Ciara is getting from Jive.  The label is putting millions of dollars on her, getting her to open for Britney Spears, Get her endorsement deals, etc…. They surely didn’t get their investment back after the album tanked. The funny part is both girls sold about the same. (but Toya with zero promo). I still love a lot of songs from “Fantasy Ride”. Best songs: “Like a surgeon”, “G is for Girl”, “Work”.

#12. R. KELLY: Untitled 3/5
This is the album I’m currently jamming. I didn’t expect it to be this good since I don’t like the single “Number One”. The best songs are the one where R. Kelly stays true to himself and not when he tries to match today’s current standard in music.
Best tracks: “Be my #2″, “Religious”, “Echo”

#11. RIHANNA: Rated R 3.1/5
I like this album. I could’ve charted it a little higher but the thing is I got tired of it pretty quick. It’s a very coherent album. She can’t perform for shit but her producers makes everything sounds good.
Best songs: “Russian roulette”, “Rude Boy”, “Photographs”, “Cold Case Love”

#10. ALICIA KEYS: The Element of Freedom 3.2/5
Best soul album of the year

This album has yet to grow on me but it’s definitely quality music. Stand out tracks: “Like the sea”, “Put it in a love song feat Beyonce”, “this Bed”

#9. GINUWINE: A man’s thoughts 3.3/5
“G” is now a grown man and is not as successful/sexy as he used to be but he still does good music. I enjoyed this album. Best tracks: “Lying to Each other”, “Trouble”, “Get involved”.

#8. LADY GAGA: The Fame Monster 3.5/5
Best pop album of the year

I am not a fan of her first album at all but I actually like the new songs. Some sounds like it could be some updated Ace Of Base songs. Very smart from her. Best tracks: “Alejandro”, “Speechless”, “Monster”, “Dance in the Dark”, “Telephone” hell the whole album!

#7: WHITNEY HOUSTON: I look to you 3.5/5
I was expecting the worse after I heard the collabs with Akon and the single but to my surprise the album was actually good. Reminiscent of the “My Love is Your love” album. Best songs: “For the lovers”, “Salute”, “Worth it”.

#6: DAVID GUETTA: One Love 4/5
Best House album of the year

Great house music album. You can listen to it on a Saturday night on your way to the club. Only one track to skip: “When Love Takes Over” feat. Kelly Rowland, horrible song, total mess. (I love Kelly Rowland but not on this song)

LISTEN HERE

#5: JEREMIH: Jeremih 4/5
I DESPISE the single “Birthday sex” but the album is good. He doesn’t bring anything new to the table when it comes to artistry. (He’s just another R&B boy). His music is what you would expect from good R&B productions.

#4: THE DREAM: Love VS Money 4/5
Good album. No surprise here again… I hated the singles except for “Walking on the Moon” (which kinda flopped but I love it). Best songs: “Kelly’s 12 Play”, “Sweat it out”.

LISTEN HERE

#3. JAY-Z: The Blueprint 3 4/5
Best hip hop album of the year

I was a Jay-Z fan back in the days with the “Can I get a fuck you” and “Big Pimpin” eras but he lost when he started to use these old school hardcore hiphop beats in his previous 2 albums.(“American Gangsta” etc…) NOW I am LOVING this new album. Hot beats, Legendary flow. Stand out tracks: “Off that”, “On to the next one” and “Hate”

#2: ELECTRIK RED: How to be A Lady 4.7/5
Biggest flop of the year

Love, love LOVE this album. They started as background dancers. (You can find them on Aaliyah and Usher’s videos). Sad that it only sold 6,000 copies. (Yes six thousands, shame). They are under The Dream’s label and distributed by Def Jam. Def Jam do not promote artists that are not under them directly. The Dream was not enough for them to take off. Going back to dancing girls.

#1. LETOYA: Lady Love (DUH!) 5/5
Most slept album of the year – Best album of the year – Best R&B album of the year – Best Female of the year

We all know the story!
This is a classic album. Almost reaches “The Writing’s On The Wall” when it comes to quality and replay value. My opinion is not biased at all. I could even admit that the only track I skip is “Take away Love” which I totally despise. (Ready to make new enemies here lol) Sounds like Ryan Leslie sent one of his worse beat ever and told Toya to record the song on her own. And I don’t know why is Estelle rapping instead of singing. ANYWAY this album is AMAZING and if you don’t own it you’re clearly missing something.

Other cool albums of the year: Melanie Fiona, Robin Thicke, Chrisette Michele, Shakira, Flo Rida and Maxwell.

15 WORSE ALBUMS OF 2009. (aka Don’t waste your money on those!)

#15. BOA: Boa 1.1/5 JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE
#14. MARIO: DNA 1/5 JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE
#13. PLEASURE P: The introduction of Marcus Cooper 0.9/5 JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE
#12. MARQUES HOUSTON: Mr Houston 0.8/5 JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE
#11. ALEXANDRA BURKE: Overcome 0.7/5 JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE

#10. DAY 26: Forever in a day 0.6/5
What a step down from the first album (that I love)! The songs are just blah and looks like the videos for this project were filmed in someone’s bedroom. With all the promotion they got from MTV they only sold 200,000 copies.
JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE

#9 RYAN LESLIE: Transition 0.5/5
Ryan Leslie should have limited himself to focus on promoting the first album he released earlier this year because this one sounds like it was rushed and it’s not good at all. (one good song though). This album sadly sold 20,000 copies total.
JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE

#8. CHRIS BROWN: Graffiti 0.2/5
Not only I do not support this person after what he did to Rihanna but his music is garbage anyway. No stand-out songs.
JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE

#7. KERI HILSON: In A perfect World 0.1/5
Overrated Female of the year

She has only one hit single and people talk about her like she’s some Beyonce or some shit.  She gets all the opportunities because there is currently no other mainstream R&B chick. The album is mediocre at best.
JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE

#6. USHER. Everything that leaked this year 0.1/5
Failed comeback of the year

OMG what a disappointment from Usher this year.  I use to be a major Usher fan but his new material is sooo trash. Even his label is pushing his album back over and over because of that reason.

JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE

#5: AMERIE: In Love and War 0/5
Trashiest Female album of the year

Amerie use to be hot. And she’s got great stage presence. This album is just not the business at all.

JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE

#4: TREY SONGZ: Ready -10/5 (negative ten out of five)
Most boring album of the year

Generic BORING R&B. I REALLY tried to give it a chance by listening to the album three times. But went straight to the “Recycle bin” on the right corner of my desktop after that. He’s sexy (and knows it) but that’s the only good thing about him. Be cute and shut up please.

JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE

#3. KID CUDI: Man on the moon -50/5
Trashiest Male album of the year

Kid Cudi is another cutie but please, just  shut up too! He sounds a total MESS. I’ve seen him perform live and I’m wondering 1) how this dude got a record deal (probably by sucking Kanye West’s dick) and 2) how can people be fooled like that?

JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE

#2: JAY SEAN: All or nothing -100/5
Corniest album of the year

The one hit wonder dude of the year. His songs are the corniest ever. It’s like they were written for 5 year old kids. His voice is ridiculous and ANNOYING. NEXT.

JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE

#1: DRAKE: So far so gone -1000/5
Over-rated Male of the year

I do not get the hype around this dude. Hate his voice and everything about him. Radios play him like every two seconds and for me that means SWITCH THE STATION IMMEDIATELY.

JUDGE FOR YOURSELF HERE

What about you? What are your favorite and least favorite albums of this year?

Happy holidays and God bless everyone!
