After Party

This song has a serious bass-line, that really makes it JAM! As soon as the track starts, you find yourself moving your head, and getting into the groove. The production on this song is phenomenal, and I can see this heating up dance-floors across the world. This is a pop-tinged R&B record done very well. Another personal favorite (I have a lot of favorites on this album, which speaks volumes about the collective high quality of “Lady Love”) that stays on repeat.

Conceptually this song is cleverly constructed; replete with metaphors and analogies throughout. LeToya likens the end of a relationship to the end of a party; she sings, “…It’s my last dance with you, when the party’s over there’s an after party, and there will be an after you, there is an after you, to the after party…keep it moving to the after party!!!”

This uptempo has refreshing energy and great melodies reminiscent of an uptempo from Mary J Blige’s “My Life” album. Be warned though, if you listen to this song in your car, you will find yourself inexplicably speeding!! When a song knocks hard like this one does, you have to monitor your speed meticulously! This song also provides us with yet another example of LeToya’s clean ad-libs; with this album LeToya has truly developed into a great ad-libber. Being able to deliver stellar ad-libs is a skill that not all “singers” possess. It requires being able to make a special connection with the lyrics/melodies of your song. The connection is rock solid here, and LeToya’s ad-libs are so heartfelt. At one point near the end of the song she wails, “Please believe there’s an after you!!” LeToya is really feeling it, and I’m feeling it right along with her!

Singwell’s rating: This is a definite 5/5, single material!

Good To Me

“This is dedicated to all the GOOD men…” Why thank you LeToya!!

It seems as though there is an overabundance of songs about the shortcomings of us men, so it’s quite refreshing that LeToya didn’t travel that familiar road on this track. “Good To Me” deals with the qualities LeToya is seeking in a man. The music on this track puts me in the mind frame of Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones” just slightly. Now when people hear this song I’m sure they’re going to say “I don’t know what he was talking about, and he clearly didn’t know either!” It’s just a very minute resemblance in the music, some people may disagree, but if you pay close attention you’ll hear the marginal similarities in production.

In any case I’m really fond of the track itself, I feel that everything really works well together as far as the instrumentation is concerned. Vocally LeToya is as convincing as ever; “if you see a good man throw your hands up, I don’t want to waste no time, so if you want to be mine just be good to me…” delivering the vocals with unsurpassed fervency. The chorus of this song screams “anthem.”
